What Is an NVR?
Understand the recorder commonly used with IP cameras and why storage planning matters.
An NVR, or network video recorder, is a device that receives and stores video from compatible IP cameras. It gives a system a central place for recordings and can make it easier to review camera footage later.
The amount of time footage is available depends on factors such as the number of cameras, image quality, how often cameras record, and storage capacity. A larger system or longer recording requirement may need more storage planning.
An NVR is only one part of a CCTV setup. Camera placement, network stability, access permissions, and the way footage is reviewed all matter as well.
What to look at
- Compatible cameras and recorder channels
- How many cameras you plan to use
- How long recordings may need to remain available
- Where the recorder can be installed safely
