What Are CCTV Motion Alerts?

Learn how camera notifications can help focus attention on activity without replacing review or good placement.

CCTV motion alerts are notifications triggered when a camera detects activity in a selected area. Depending on the camera and app, an authorised user may receive an alert and open the live view or a related recording.

Alerts work best when detection areas are planned carefully. A camera facing a busy street, moving trees, reflective surfaces, or passing vehicles can create unnecessary notifications if its settings are not adjusted.

Motion alerts can be a helpful prompt to check activity, but they are not a substitute for sensible camera placement, recording settings, or reviewing an event when details matter.

What to look at

  • The zones that should trigger an alert
  • Common sources of unnecessary motion
  • Who should receive notifications
  • Whether internet and app access are reliable
Planning note: Exact equipment, placement, compatibility, wiring, and site requirements depend on the property and the chosen system. An on-site assessment can confirm the appropriate setup.
